PLOWS Council on Aging began operation in September, 1975. The agency was created to
respond to the pressing needs in the four townships of Palos, Lemont, Orland and Worth for
social services that could not be met by existing community services. It was determined
these services could be met more practically on a regional level.
PLOWS was originally conceived as an advocacy organization to convince service providers
to recognize the needs of older persons in the PLOWS service area and provide the needed
services. As time wore on it was clear that many services were not available or were not
going to be available to the area, so PLOWS became more and more of a service providing
agency.
PLOWS stands for the area served - the four townships of Palos, Lemont, Orland and Worth.
An estimated 60,000 older persons reside in the nineteen municipalities within our service
area.
Our Mission
The PLOWS Council on Aging is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting older
persons over the age of 60.
Company Profile
The work of PLOWS is performed by a staff of professionals, in-home workers and
volunteers.
Principal social staff have Master's Degrees in social work and counseling in addition to
extensive direct experience with older persons' problems.
In-Home workers have practical experience in providing housekeeping and homemaker service.
Homemakers receive special training in personal care before they are placed with a client.
Volunteer drivers are selected for their ability to be compatible with clients they serve.
PLOWS is guided by a Board of Directors comprised of community leaders.
PLOWS has a full and part-time staff of 47 professionals and in-home workers and 35
volunteers who work in social service programs. Another 100 volunteers provide additional
assistance through the year.
